CWU Women's Soccer Falls to Saint Martin's

Wildcats Suffer Fourth 1-0 Loss in Last Seven Games

Box Score

ELLENSBURG (Oct. 20) -- For the fourth time in its past seven games, the Central Washington University women's soccer team allowed just one goal, but for the fourth time during that span, that goal was the differential in a 1-0 loss to visiting Saint Martin's University on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats, who had rallied from an early 1-0 deficit on Thursday to defeat Western Oregon 2-1, fell to 5-9-2 overall and 4-7-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. They slipped back into sixth place with two games remaining, while Saint Martin's edged ahead of CWU in the standings by improving to 5-7-0 in the conference and 7-9-0 overall.

In a game that proved to be nearly statistically even in terms of both shots (13 apiece) and fouls (six against Saint Martin's and five against CWU), an early goal at the eighth minute by Saint Martin's sophomore Hanna Massee was the difference in the contest. Massee collected a rebound in front of the goal and found the back of the net against Wildcat goalkeeper KAYLA LIPSTON (Federal Way/Decatur HS), who had saved the initial attempt by the Saints' Clarissa Strayer.

The Wildcats had a golden opportunity to tie the game at the 31st minute on a penalty kick after one of their players was fouled inside the penalty box, but senior KELSY VILLEGAS' (Graham/Graham-Kapowsin HS) penalty was saved by the Saints' Ashley Engel, preserving the 1-0 score.

CWU had four of its six corner kick opportunities in the second half, but the Wildcats were never able to find the equalizer as all five of their shots on goal were saved by Engel.

Freshman LAUREN DUTY (Black Diamond/Tahoma HS), who had scored the two CWU goals in Thursday's win over Western Oregon, led all Wildcat players with three shot attempts on Saturday. Sophomores HADLI FARRAND (Ellensburg) and SAVANNA MOOREHOUSE (Bonney Lake) were credited with two shots each, and Lipston made six saves in goal for CWU.

Nicole Nedervelt led all players with four shot attempts, including two on goal, for Saint Martin's, which improved to 4-2-0 all-time versus CWU in Ellensburg.

Central Washington closes out the 2012 regular season next week, visiting conference leader Western Washington University on Thursday (Oct. 25) prior to its home finale and Senior Day against Simon Fraser University on Saturday (Oct. 27) at 1 p.m.
