MONMOUTH, Ore. (May 11) -- Three Central Washington University men claimed individual event titles, helping the Wildcats to a second-place finish at the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships that concluded Saturday at McArthur Field. The CWU women finished seventh.
All three individual titles for the CWU men came in field events, where senior Bryan Mack (Arlington) won the men's long jump with a best mark of 7.11 meters (23 feet, 4 inches). He also added second-place times in the 100 meters (10.85) and as a member of the Wildcats' 4x100-meter relay team (41.89). Mack also placed third in the triple jump (14.18 meters/46 feet, 6 1/4 inches).
Freshman Troy Martin (Port Angeles) and senior Quinton Agosta (Bainbridge Island/Bainbridge HS) won event titles in the men's throwing events. Martin narrowly won the men's discus with a best throw of 48.98 meters (160 feet, 8 1/2 inches), also placing fourth in the shot put (15.05 meters/49 feet, 4 1/2 inches). Agosta earned a convincing win the men's hammer, throwing 56.67 meters (185 feet, 11 1/4 inches) to outdistance teammate Mike Jensen (Tenino) in the event. Jensen had a mark of 53.90 meters (176 feet, 10 1/4 inches). Agosta also met the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division II Championships in the event, and will await the final rankings to see if he will advance to the championships in two weeks.
The CWU men accumulated 141 points, finishing 42 1/2 points behind rival Western Washington University. The Wildcats edged out Western Oregon University (137) and the University of Alaska Anchorage (129) for their highest team finish in the meet since a second-place finish in 2010.
All told, the Wildcats accumulated eight second-place finishes and seven thirds between the men's and women's squads. Senior Andrew Venema (Bickleton) had a second-place time of 14.72 seconds in the men's 110-meter hurdles, adding to a third-place finish in the decathlon that was held Apr. 29-30. Senior Brennan Boyes (Puyallup) was second in the men's high jump with a height of 1.96 meters (6 feet, 5 inches).
The CWU women were led by junior thrower Becki Duhamel (Wenatchee), who picked up three top-three finishes in the championship meet. She placed second in both the discus (41.95 meters/137 feet, 7 3/4 inches) and the hammer (51.20 meters/168 feet), and was third in the shot put (12.82 meters/42 feet, 0 3/4 inches) to accumulate 22 of the Wildcats' 65 1/2 points in the women's competition. Senior Jamie Larsen (Kent/Kentwood HS) placed second in the women's pole vault with a best height of 3.57 meters (11 feet, 8 1/2 inches), while senior Kelsey Kreft (Lake Stevens) gave the Wildcat women their lone top-three finish in a track event with a third-place time of 11:10.73 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Wildcats finished seventh in the team scoring, with the University of Alaska Anchorage claiming its first-ever GNAC Women's Outdoor Championship.
With the regular season complete, a total of seven athletes (and eight event marks) have met provisional or automatic qualifying standards for this year's NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships, which will be held May 23-25 in Pueblo, Colo. Senior Braden Keller (Kelso) is the lone Wildcat guaranteed of a spot at nationals after a top mark of 67.79 meters (222 feet, 5 inches) during the regular season. Agosta joined the list on Saturday, while Mack (triple jump), Kreft (steeplechase), Larsen (pole vault), Duhamel (hammer), and Tayler Fettig (So., Olympia; high jump and heptathlon) had all previously met provisional qualifying standards.
