MOSCOW, Idaho (Jan. 23) — Central Washington University high jumper
Tayler Fettig has become the latest Wildcat to exceed the NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying standard, as the Olympia senior recorded a jump of 5-05 Friday at the Idaho Collegiate meet at the University of Idaho.
"It was good for her to get that in her first meet," said CWU head track and field coach
Kevin Adkisson. "Especially when she wasn't on all the way."
Senior
Becki Duhamel, from Wenatchee, also bettered her provisional national qualifying mark in the weight throw, with a toss of 57-00 1/4, while surpassing the standard in the shot put, with a throw of 45-11 1/4, which were both new personal records for her.
"That [weight throw] was two-feet past where she already was for her provisional [mark]," remarked Adkisson. "She had some pretty significant improvements from where she was. She is really starting to come along."
In addition, junior distance runner
Dani Eggleston, Longview, made her indoor season debut, setting a new personal indoor best in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:17.72.
Among the Wildcat men, sophomore
Armando Tafoya, from George, set a personal best—for the second consecutive week—in the weight throw, with a toss of 56-01 ¼.
"He's now within about four inches of the provisional," Adkisson pointed out. "He'll probably hit that in another meet or two. Armando's already the leader in the [Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC)], so that was good."
Saturday's event was the third of seven for which CWU team members are scheduled to compete during the indoor season.
"All around, we saw a lot of good quality marks for the first time out of the gate," said Adkisson about his team's performance Friday. "For most of the women's team, it was the first meet of the year. A few people are still getting the rust shaken off, but it was a pretty solid day."
Next Friday, a select group of Wildcats will participate at the University of Washington Invitational in Seattle. CWU's next full-squad meeting will be at the Washington State University Cougar Indoor in Pullman, Wash., in two weeks.
The indoor season concludes at the GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held February 20-21 at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
