CWU Men's Rugby Splits Saturday Doubleheader

SEATTLE, Wash (March 7) – The Central Washington University men's rugby team split a Saturday doubleheader versus the University of Washington and the Seattle Saracens, beating the Huskies 50-10, and losing 47-14 against the Saracens.

"I thought the guys played really well, all things considered," Head coach Tony Pacheco said. "Cameron Marek and Martin Van Der Wall played well today."

The Wildcats found themselves down early in the match, as the Huskies would strike first in the 7th minute. The Wildcats finally got on the board when Larry Peneueta touched down in the try zone and Mike Betancourth converted his lone two-point conversion of the day.

In the 29th minute, Nick Siemens and Jake Spiller doubled the Wildcat score to 14, as the lead grew to 14-5. Two minutes later Cameron Marek would score his first of two trys on the day to give the Wildcats a 21-5 lead.

The Wildcats rolled into halftime with a comfortable 33-5 lead that saw five different Wildcats score in the first half.

Marek capped his day off with his second try in the 50th minute and a late score by the Huskies in the 74th minute left the final at 50-10 in favor of the visitors.

"It was a great exhibition, lots of people there, everyone came away satisfied," Pacheco said of the second match of the day versus the Saracens.

The Wildcats fell into an early hole, as the Saracens would score the first 19 points of the match. But the Wildcats would swing back, cracking off 14 straight unanswered points of their own. Ian Wright got the Wildcats on the board in the 44th minute and ten minutes later Dominic Lindstrom added another five points for the Wildcats.

"We just ran of gas towards the end," Pacheco said. "They were using free substitutions and bringing players in and out all match, we stuck with our guys throughout."

With the score stuck at 19-14 in favor of the Saracens, the host team started to pull away with 28 straight points, and ended the match at 47-14.

The Wildcats will travel back to Ellensburg to host another doubleheader at the Wildcat Rugby Pitch next Saturday, March. 14. The first match will be against the University of Oregon beginning at Noon, and the second matchup will feature the Seattle Saracens.

"All in all we were very happy with how we played," Pacheco said. "It was a good thing for us in the long run and we learned a lot from it. We will get ready to bounce back and play two again next Saturday.
