ELLENSBURG, Wash (Jan. 27) – The Central Washington University men's basketball team will travel to Concordia University and No. 4 Western Oregon University for a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference games.
The Wildcats are fresh of a two game home stand that saw the team earn a victory against Simon Fraser University and loose a close contest on ROOT Sports to archrival Western Washington University.
With a record of 11-4 and a 6-4 conference mark, the Wildcat will look to complete the season sweep of both Concordia and Western Oregon.
The first game of the road trip will be against the Cavaliers (Jan. 28) who own an overall record of 5-12, 3-7 GNAC. The Wildcat secured a five-point win when the two teams met in early January, winning 85-80.
Leading the charge for Concordia will be Drew Martin who averages 15.4 points per game. Latrell Wilson chips in with 14.9 points per game for an offense that ranks 10
th in points scored in the GNAC at a 72.1 clip.
"Concordia is a good team and gave us a good game here at home," CWU Head Coach
Greg Sparling said. "They have a pair of talented scorers who we will have to neutralize more effectively this go around."
Western Oregon is currently ranked No. 4 in the country and owns the top spot in the GNAC. The Wolves boast a 16-2 overall record 9-1 GNAC, losing to the University of Oregon and the Wildcats. The team's lone conference loss was in Ellensburg, when the Wildcat upset the then No. 3 team in the country by a score of 81-77.
The Wolves are led by reigning GNAC Player of the Year Andy Avgi and his 21.8 points per game. The trio of Julian Nichols, Jordan Wiley and Alex Roth are all scoring above 10 points a game to help the Wolves' attack that scores 79.7 points per game which is good enough for fifth in the conference. The Wolves' strength might lie in their defense as the team limits its opponents to a scoring average of just 68 points per game, which ranks second in the conference behind Seattle Pacific University.
"Western Oregon will be motivated this Saturday after we gave them their only GNAC loss," Sparling said. "There is no question that they are a talented team that plays tough defense. They also force a lot of turnovers, so ball control will be very important if we want to come away with another victory."
Both games will streamed live on Wildcatsports.com.
