On a rainy day in Cheney, Wash., Caroline Kruckeberg won the 1971 Division of Girl’s and Women's Sports [DGWS] National Championship in the mile. Kruckeberg's winning time was 5:12.5, becoming CWU's first female national champion. She also competed in the 880-meter race at the national championships, placing third in the event that took place a mere 20 minutes after her winning performance in the mile. The Shoreline High School graduate also competed in cross country at CWU and played left wing on the school's field hockey team where she was coached by CWU Hall of Famer Jean Putnam.
