Hammons was an honorable mention All-American shortstop for the Wildcats in both the 1968 and 1969 season. In 1968, he helped lead Central to its first NAIA World Series appearance, earning a spot on the All-World Series team. At the time of induction Hammons had spent 14 seasons as the head baseball coach at Snohomish High School after coaching 10 years at the junior college level and more than 20 coaching American Legion.
