MacAlpine was a four-year letterman. (1981-84) for CWU Athletic Hall of Fame wrestling coach, Eric Beardsley. MacAlpine won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics; (NAIA) 126-pound national title in 1984. Unseeded going into the tournament, MacAlpine advanced to the finals by, knocking, off the Nos. 1 ,8, 9, and 12 seeds and then defeating the No.3 seed in the finals MacAlpine also placed second at the 1983 national meet, becoming one of only six wrestlers in Beardsiey's legendary, 25-year coaching career to advance to the NAIA championship match in two different seasons. During his CWU career, MacAlpine won 12 of 15 matches at the national championship tournament. He led the wildcats to a seventh-place team finish in 1984 and a 12th-place finish in 1983 at nationals MacAlpine was also named an NAIA District 1 Scholar-Athlete for the 1983-84 season.
