TACOMA, WA (Mar. 8) -- Central Washington University's track and field team put together a dominating effort at the PLU Invitational in Tacoma Saturday afternoon.
In all, CWU left Tacoma with victories in 14 different events despite the uncooperative cold and rainy elements.
"It's always awesome to get that many victories because that helps us keep motivated through the weather," CWU head coach
Kevin Adkisson said.
The duo of
CONNIE MORGAN and
MEGAN ROGERS led a 1-2 charge in the women's 10,000-meter run, however it was far from the only highlights for the Wildcat track and field team.
Both Morgan (38:31.48) and Rogers (38:42.79) finished with a bit of history as well.
"Those are both top 10 marks on our all-time list," Adkisson said. "That was really cool. Connie and Megan ran together the whole way. Megan, that's a huge improvement for her."
Fellow distance runner
DANI EGGLESTON also took home the win in the 5,000-meter run. Her personal record of 18:02.63 was more than 35 seconds faster than her nearest competitor and already put her in qualifying position for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in May.
"She ran that one pretty much solo," Adkisson said. "She was basically alone after the first two laps, which for her is good. That's significant for her to auto qualify for the GNAC Championships."
But it wasn't solely the distance events where CWU shined.
BERNARI STERNEN's 14.96-second finish in the 110-meter hurdles put some on notice, his head coach said.
"That's going to lead the conference so far, easily," Adkisson said. "To do it the first week in with cold weather is impressive."
Adkisson was happy to see another handful of personal records on the day, including
NICK SPENCER (32:53.85, second in the 10,000-meter run) and
ALLISON DECK (15.84 seconds, first in the 100-meter hurdles) starting their season's off well.
In the men's 400-meter dash, CWU finished 1-2-3 with
CHAYCE SATHER (51.06 seconds),
DARREN ARNDT (52.41) and
KENNEDY SARMIENTO (53.31) leading the pace.
Adkisson boasted that Sarmiento ran three different 400-meter events on Saturday, including the 400-meter dash, the 400-meter hurdles (first, 58.23 seconds) as well as anchoring one of CWU's 4x400-meter relay teams (second, 3:33.20).
In the men's 200-meter dash, the Wildcats took hold of the top five places, led by
HARISH PRASAD's 22.65-second finish.
"That's solid," Adkisson said of sweeping the men's 200- and 400-meter races. "We like to dominate those the best we can."
With inclement weather, consistent marks in the field events were difficult to come by, however
JUSTIN PETERSON's win in the high jump with a 1.9-meter leap caught Adkisson's attention.
"That was pretty good with the way the rain was coming down."
The Wildcats head to Spokane next weekend for the Dusty Lane Invitational at Spokane Falls Community College. Also on tap for CWU is the NCAA Division II Nationals for Indoor Track and Field. CWU's
TAYLER FETTIG will represent the Wildcats in the high jump.
