HOLTMAN, WALLACE WIN ESPY AWARD FOR ACT OF SPORTSMANSHIP
Wildcat Duo Honored With “Best Moment†ESPY LOS ANGELES – (July 20) Central Washington University student-athletes
Mallory Holtman (White Salmon/Columbia HS) and
Liz Wallace (Florence, Mont./Florence-Carlton HS) have been awarded an ESPY for the “Best Sports Moment of 2008â€.
The 2008 ESPY Awards, presented by HUMMER and UnderArmour, aired Sunday on ESPN and Holtman, Wallace and Western Oregon senior Sara Tucholsky were on hand at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles to accept the award.
The trio also appeared on stage with host Justin Timberlake in one of the shows' opening acts.
They were nominated for the award on July 2 for the act of sportsmanship that had gained a wealth of national media attention since it occurred.
On Apr. 26, Holtman and Wallace carried Tucholsky around the bases to complete her home run trot after Tucholsky, who had never homered previously in her college career, went down with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rounding first base. Holtman and Wallace then picked up Tucholsky and carried her around the bases so that she could be credited with her three-run home run, kneeling down to help their injured opponent touch each of the bases along the way.
The award was given to the nominee who accumulated the most votes from fans, who voted online at ESPN.com.
The heroics of Holtman and Wallace got more votes than Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, who less than a year after surviving cancer, threw a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals, and Danica Patrick, who won her first career IndyCar race at the IndyCar Japan 300.
