BELLINGHAM (Apr. 23) -- Junior Sakae Kamagata (Chiba, Japan/Yokoshiba) won both the men's long jump and the men's triple jump, highlighting eleven total event victories for the Central Washington University track and field team at the WWU Twilight Open at Civic Stadium on Saturday.
Kamagata's two wins were among eight men's event victories on the day, of which three were in field events. Sophomore Brennan Boyes (Puyallup) led an entourage of Wildcats in the men's high jump, winning with a best mark of 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4 3/4 inches).
Kamagata won the long jump with a mark of 6.63 meters (21 feet, 9 inches), while taking first place in the triple jump with a best mark of 13.73 meters (45 feet, 1/2 inch). Both marks met the automatic qualifying standard for the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held May 14-15 in Monmouth, Ore.
Central also secured wins in the men's 200, 800, and 3,000, with victories by sophomore Scott Morrison (Hoquiam), freshman Nathan Power (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS), and junior Manuel Santos (Yakima/A.C. Davis HS), respectively. Morrison was also part of the Wildcats' two winning teams in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Women's wins on Saturday belonged to senior Shaina Afoa (Anchorage, Alaska/A.J. Dimond HS), who anchored a stacked shot put field, and senior Jordan Stueckle (Selah) in the women's hammer. Like Kamagata on the men's side, the winning marks by both Afoa and Stueckle met the GNAC's automatic qualifying standard.
The Wildcats' 4x800 meter relay team on the women's side also placed first in its event.
Central's two most dominating events on Saturday were the men's high jump and the women's shot put. Seven of the nine competitors in the men's high jump were from CWU, where Boyes was one of three Wildcats to clear the 6-4 3/4 height, winning the event on judge's decision by virtue of fewer misses. Tommy Sheriff (Bellevue) and Lewis Meyers (Carson/Stevenson HS) also cleared the same height, while two of their teammates cleared 1.85 meters to finish fourth and fifth.
In the women's shot, the Wildcats took the first three places and had four of the top six finishers. Afoa, senior Torrie Self (Kent/Kentwood HS), and Stueckle swept the top three spots, while freshman Annie Martinez (Moxee/East Valley HS) was sixth. Afoa was the only one of the four to establish a season's best in the event on Saturday, though, as her best throw was 13.14 meters (43 feet, 1 1/2 inches).
The Pelluer Invitational and the Saint Martin's Invitational are both on the schedule for the Wildcats next weekend, with the Pelluer meet taking place at Eastern Washington University in Cheney on Friday (Apr. 29) and the Saint Martin's Invitational on Saturday (Apr. 30) in Lacey.
