LACEY (Apr. 30) -- Sophomore Scott Morrison (Hoquiam) and senior Torrie Self (Kent/Kent-Meridian HS) were both two-event winners, highlighting a strong day for the Central Washington University track and field team at the second annual Saint Martin's University Invitational.

The CWU men won the team event with 225 points, cruising to a 72-point win over rival Western Washington University, while the Wildcat women were second place with 168 points, just six points behind Seattle Pacific University.

Morrison swept titles in the men's 200- and 400-meter dashes. He won the 200 in a time of 22.20 seconds, while his 400-meter victory was in a time of 48.38 seconds as he and teammate Colin Alexander (Fall City/Mount Si HS) went one-two in the latter event.

Self, meanwhile, won the women's shot put and women's discus throw. Her victory in the shot put, with a best mark of 13.01 meters (42 feet, 8 1/4 inches) led a top-four sweep for Wildcat throwers as teammates Kaylee Baumstark (Port Angeles), Shaina Afoa (Anchorage, Alaska/A.J. Dimond HS), and Jordan Stueckle (Selah) followed suit. Self's best mark in the discus on Saturday was 43.96 meters (144 feet, 3 inches).

Overall, CWU individuals won 12 events and added two relay race victories. Seven of the individual wins were on the men's side, including a sweep of the jumps where Brennan Boyes (Puyallup), Manny Melo (Battle Ground), and James Cho (Spanaway/Spanaway Lake HS) won the high jump, long jump, and triple jump, respectively. Hurdler Darnell Harris (Tacoma/Spanaway Lake HS) won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 15.92 seconds, while freshman mid-distance runner Nathan Power (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS) claimed the 800-meter title in a time of 1:56.33.

Freshman Chelsea Genther (Burlington/Burlington-Edison HS) won the women's 100-meter hurdles (15.32 seconds) and placed third in the women's 100 meters (12.81), while steeplechaser Adriana Mendoza (Zillah) took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:33.79). In the throwing events, Stueckle won the hammer to add to her fourth-place mark in the shot put, taking the hammer with a toss of 45.15 meters (148 feet, 1 inch).

The Wildcats' relay victories were in the women's 4x400-meter relay (4:02.06) and in the men's 4x100-meter relay (43.00). Central finished second in the men's 4x400 with a time of 3:19.32.

Next on the schedule for the CWU track and field team is the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi-Event Championships, to be held Monday and Tuesday (May 2-3) in Nampa, Idaho. The Wildcats are expected to send five men's decathletes and at least one women's heptathlete, with results counting toward the conference championship meet score. Four of the top five decathlon point totals in the GNAC this season belong to CWU athletes.
