San Francisco, Cali (Oct. 25) – The Central Washington University men's rugby teamed opened the Battle in the Bay 7's tournament with three wins over San Jose State University, University of California Davis and San Diego State University.
The Wildcats outscored their opponents 83-7 on the day.
"We got better from match one to match three," Head Coach
Tony Pacheco said. "When a team does that it's always a good thing. I was happy how they played."
Central Washington won game one, 28-7, versus San Jose St.
Cameron Marek (San Ramon, CA, California) led all scorers with two tries in game one, and would finish the day with four tries altogether.
Josh Bower (Yakima, WA, West Valley) converted all four conversions in the first match.
"
Vili Toluta'u (Wailuku, HI, HP Baldwin) was a turnover machine for us," Pacheco said of his sophomore flanker. "He won us a lot of position, and was real good over the ball all day."
Marek found the try zone twice in game two, aided by solo tries from Bower,
Zach Siemens (Minnetonka, MN, Minnetonka) and
Dominic Lindstrom (Kent, WA, Kentwood), as the Wildcats defeated UC Davis, 29-0.
A 28-0 win over SDSU clinched a quarterfinal berth for the Wildcats.
Aladdin Schirmer (North Bend, WA, Mount Si) found the try zone three separate times for his first hat trick of the season.
Scott Dean (Renton, WA, Liberty) kicked three conversions in the win and totaled five throughout the day.
The Wildcats will battle Arizona State University in the quarterfinals, Sunday, Oct. 26. The match is set to begin a 10:40 a.m.
"It's going to be a challenge," Pacheco said of tomorrow's matchup. "ASU has a couple of all-Americans, so it'll be real tough, but that's why we come down to this tournament. We come to play teams like this, and we are excited for tomorrow."
