ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Nov. 16) -- The Central Washington University men's rugby team shutout Washington State University 129-0 Sunday afternoon as 12 different players scored tries in the contest.
"The guys were anxious to get a run in 15's especially since we have been playing 7's all fall," CWU head coach
Tony Pacheco said. "They were chomping at the bit to get out and stretch their legs a bit. Overall I was happy with our communication level and the execution considering the conditions."
The scoring started almost immediately for the Wildcats when
Gavin Schag scored less than a minute in the contest, followed by two straight tries by
Vili Toluta'u who scored three times in the first half.
Twelve minutes into the match the Wildcat held a 24-0 lead after
Malachi Jones scored his first try of the season. The Wildcat lead 67-0 as
Scott Dean put a stamp on the opening half scoring his second try of the afternoon in the 39
th minute.
The momentum carried over to the second half with
Martin Van Der Wal finding the try zone in the 41
st minute, followed by Schag adding his third score of the match two minutes later to build an 81-0 lead.
"Gavin [Schag] had a great game for us from his hooker position," Pacheco said. "He supported his ball carriers all around the field today which led to his hat trick."
Malachi Jones ended the match exactly the way the Wildcats started the contest with a score as time expired as CWU walked away with the 129-0 victory.
In total the Wildcats scored 21 tries, 11 in the first half, and
