The Central Washington University men's rugby team advances to the semi finals of the Varsity Cup with a narrow 25-24 victory over the University of Utah in the Super Regional held on the campus of UCLA.
Central Washington remains unbeaten this season with a 14-0 overall record.
"This is definitely a character building win," said CWU Head Coach Anthony Pacheco. "We were able to stick it out and find a way to get a win. Those types of wins undoubtedly help you."
The two teams were deadlocked at 10-10 going into halftime, but the Wildcats took a 17-10 lead with a converted try early in the second half. The Utes answered back later in the half to again tie the match up again, this time at 17-17.
With under 15 minutes left to play CWU took a 22-17 lead on a unconverted try, but the Wildcats fumbled the kickoff allowing Utah to obtain possession and score a converted try to take a 24-22 advantage.
It wasn't until the final minutes of the contest that the Wildcats secured the victory when
JOSH BOWER made a 40 yard penalty try to give CWU the final 25-24 edge.
"Utah did a great job maintaining possession and making us defend for double-digit phases multiple times," said Pacheco. "I felt we were inaccurate in most areas of the game and we lacked discipline as the penalty count seemed to be two-to-one against us. We have to be more disciplined next week."
Central Washington will next face off with Cal in the semi-finals next Saturday Apr. 26 back in California.
