Men's Rugby Suffers Lone Defeat to Cal 58-14 in Varsity Cup Semi-Final

BERKELEY, Calif (Apr. 26) -- The Central Washington University men's rugby team received its only blemish of the 2014 season in a 58-14 loss to the University of California Saturday afternoon at Witter Rugby Field in the semi-finals of the Varsity Cup.

Central Washington (14-1) fell behind 24-0 early in the match after Cal took advantage of a few CWU handling errors and penalties.

The Wildcats got on the board when Jacob Bates (Burlington, WA) crossed the goaline for a try that was converted by Josh Bower (Yakima, WA) as CWU cut the lead to 24-7.

Cal continued to put pressure on CWU and ended the first half with a 48-7 lead.

The CWU defense held the Cal attack from scoring for the majority of the second-half and Scott Dean (Renton, WA) Scored for the Wildcats late in the half to giving Central its second try of the match.

But Cal stayed strong and finished the match 58-14 to continue on to the Varsity Cup Finals.
