SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (Feb. 21) – Central Washington sophomore pitcher
Kiana Wood took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the softball teams opener against Dominican University leading the Wildcats to a 6-0 win. The Wildcats fell in the nightcap 3-0.
With the split the Wildcats move to 5-2 on the season and Dominican now stands with a 2-7 record.
Game one – 6-0 Win Wood (2-0) cruised to her second win of the season holding the Penguins hitless through 5 1/3 innings. She gave up her first hit in the sixth inning but held Dominican in check for the entire game, walking just one batter and striking out four, leading the Wildcats to the 6-0 win.
Both teams went scoreless in the first three innings with the Wildcats recording the only hit at that point of the ball game. However, the fourth inning would prove fruitful for CWU scoring six runs on six hits to open a 6-0 lead.
Kailyn Campbell led the big fourth inning off with a single and then stole second base. A single by
Austin Wilkerson and a RBI bunt single by
Andrea Hamada gave the Wildcats their first tally of the contest.
Michaela Hazlett followed with a run-scoring single followed by a pair of two-run hits by
Remy Bradley and
Sammy Morris, Morris' safety being a triple to centerfield.
Morris went 2 for 4 with two RBI and Bradley also added a pair RBI on her lone hit in the sixth inning.
Game Two – 3-0 loss The nightcap showed to be a bit more competitive with the score remaining 0-0 through five innings. In the top of the sixth
Taylor Ferleman led off with a single and Campbell followed with a double to right field to set the Wildcats up with runners on second and third with no outs. Central Washington ended up loading the bases with two outs, but the Penguins worked their way out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Penguins got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of singles leading to a run crossing home to take a 1-0 lead, and then a homerun with a runner on first pushed the Dominican advantage to 3-0 heading into the seventh inning.
Ferleman accounted for three of the Wildcats seven hits in game two going a perfect 3 for 3.
