Bellingham, Wash (Feb. 7) – The Central Washington University men's rugby team claimed its third Cascade Cup by defeating Western Washington University by a score of 132-3.
This was the team's first 15's matchup in the Northwest Collegiate Rugby Conference this season.
"This was a very good effort by everyone," Head coach
Tony Pacheco said. "We played unselfish rugby and scored some beautiful tires."
One of the masterpieces occurred in the first minute of play. After winning the opening kickoff,
Nick Siemens booted a cross-pitch kick that traveled the width of the playing field. The ball hit a streaking
Ian Wright who caught the legged-pass and made the Western fullback commit. Wright then dumped the ball off to
Scott Dean who scored the opening try.
The Wildcats found the try zone 20 times in the match.
Josh Bower converted on 16 two-point conversions.
"
Nick Siemens stepped in at fly half and created a lot of space for
Scott Dean," Pacheco said. "For a young player, Nick played with a lot of confidence."
The Wildcats will take the pitch again when the team will travel to Corvallis, Ore., to battle the Beavers at Oregon State University.
