ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Feb. 13) -- The Central Washington University softball team defeated Dominican University twice Saturday afternoon by scores of 4-0 and 9-2 to improve to 8-1 on the season.
With the pair of wins the Wildcats are now riding a six-game winning streak heading into tomorrows double-header against Notre Dame De Namur.
The CWU offense collected 25 hits on the day, led by
Taylor Ferleman who went 6 for 9 with two RBI and three runs scored. The wildcats also swiped nine bases on the day upping their season total to 21 in 23 attempts.
In the opener, The Wildcats scored twice in the third innings, first on an RBI single by
Alexa Olague, and
Celine Fowler scored on a passed ball after reaching base on a bunt single earlier in the inning.
Olague added her second RBI hit of the game in the fifth inning, scoring
Michaela Hazlett from third base to give CWU a 3-0 lead. The following inning the Wildcats added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by
Kailyn Campbell that plated
Taylor Ferleman.
Ferleman went 3 for 4 in the game, including a double, her fourth extra-base hit on the season. Olague was a perfect 2 for 2 from the plate, and
Austin Wilkerson also added a pair of hits in three at bats.
Kiana Wood improved her record to 5-0 on the season and captured her third complete game and second shutout of the season. Wood gave up six hits, while striking out six Penguins, allowing just one walk.
The third inning proved fruitful for the Wildcats in game two, scoring on a RBI double by
Celine Fowler that scored
Sammy Morris from second base.
Dominican took advantage of a CWU fielding error and leveled the score at 1-1.
Central Washington added three more runs in the fourth, two of which came off a single by Ferleman that plated Hazlett and Olague to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead.
The Wildcat bats exploded in the top of the sixth inning scoring four runs on five hits with Campbell, Wilkerson and
Brielle Copodonna earning RBI hits in the frame. The Wildcats also stole two bases in the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hamada.
Copodonna picked up her third win of the season (3-1), throwing all seven innings, allowing just one earned run.
The Wildcats wrap up their six-game California road trip tomorrow against Notre Dame de Namur at Noon and 2 p.m.
