Campbell's Late Game Heroics Secures Split for Softball


LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Feb. 6) – Junior first baseman Kailyn Campbell hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to give the softball team a 4-2 win over Hawaii Hilo Saturday evening to help the Wildcats secure a split on the day. 
 
The Wildcats lost the opener 3-7 to Concordia University (Irvine) in extra innings, and now sit with a 3-1 record on the season.

In the nightcap, the Wildcats dug themselves into a 0-2 hole on a fielding error that led to two unearned runs for Hawaii Hilo.
 
The Wildcats clawed to within one run when the Vulcans committed and error of their own on a long fly ball by Alexa Olague that scored Andrea Hamada.
 
Sammy Morris and Taylor Ferleman led off the seventh inning with back-to-back singles setting the stage for Campbell.  Campbell took the 0-0 offering over the left field fence to give CWU the final 4-2 lead.
 
Kiana Wood picked up the win, her second of the season, as she relieved Brielle Copodonna in the fifth inning, allowing just one hit in three innings of work.
 
3-7 Loss to Concordia (Irvine) – Extra Innings
 
Concordia got on the board in the top of the first inning when Hannah Howell hit a two-run homerun.  The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the inning on a single by Austin Wilkerson that plated Sammy Morris who reached on a walk to being the inning.
 
The Wildcats found themselves down 1-3 in the sixth inning before Copodonna earned her third hit of the contest, this time a two-run homerun to tie the game up heading into the seventh inning.
 
Central Washington threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, with two runners advancing to second base but the Eagles were able to fend off the Wildcats to force extra innings.
 
With the international tiebreaker in affect, the Eagles scored on a Wildcat error in the top of the eighth inning, and then followed up with a solo homerun to take a 5-3 lead.  Two batters later the Eagles hit a two-run home run to up their advantage to 7-3.
 
Central Washington was unable to get its offense going in the extra frame, going down in order to lose 3-7.

Up next the Wildcats will play their final game at the Desert Stinger against Cal State San Bernardino at 11:30 a.m.
