PROVO, UT (March. 5) – The Central Washington University men's rugby team came on late against No. 1 Brigham Young University in a highly anticipated matchup Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough as the Wildcats fell to the Cougars, 58-27 at South Field.
The Wildcats' record now rests at 4-2 on the 15s season while BYU moves to 11-0.
"Pretty poor performance by us today," Head coach
Tony Pacheco said. "Credit to BYU for the harsh lesson on applying pressure."
The Wildcats' offense was limited to just six points in the first half, all by way of penalty kicks off the foot of
Reuben Ludick. Central went into the break trailing 36-6.
"We had some serious mental lapses cost us in the first half," Pacheco said.
Central found some life coming out of the intermission.
Tanner Barnes found himself in the try zone in the 52
nd minute to cut the BYU lead to 36-11.
Minutes later,
Korbin Lindell punched in a try to cut the deficient to just 18 points. Lindell's score came off a heads up play from
Vili Toluta'u who scooped up a loose ball, deep in BYU territory, and fell within inches of his own score. After a quick ruck, Lindell jammed in his lone try.
Cameron Marek had the highlight of the day for the Wildcats. After a restart kick, Marek received a pass from
Ian Wright on the right flank and outran three BYU defenders for the Wildcats' final score.
"I was happy with what our bench brought today," Pacheco added. "They made an impact and our captain Vili led from the front, as he usually does."
The Wildcats will be back in action March. 23 when the team travels to Victoria, BC to take on the University of Victoria.
