BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Apr. 22) -- The Central Washington softball team split its doubleheader with Western Washington University, but clinched a Great Northwest Athletic Conference playoff berth. The Wildcats lost game one 1-2 and won the nightcap 7-5.
The Wildcats now stand 33-12 on the season and 17-9 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Vikings move to 24-21 on the season, 13-13 within the GNAC. Central Washington still holds a one game lead on Saint Martin's heading into the final two regular season games tomorrow against Simon Fraser.
The Wildcats fell in a pitching duel in the opener, as Vikings pitcher Makinlee Sellevold allowed just three hits over seven innings. The Wildcats lone run came on a sacrifice fly by
Alexa Olague that scored
Celine Fowler from third base.
In the game two of the twinbill the CWU offense came alive scoring seven runs on 11 hits, including three homeruns.
Central Washington scored three times in the third inning on a RBI double by
Kailyn Campbell followed by a two run homerun by Olague, her sixth of the season. The rest of the Wildcats seven runs came in the fifth inning on a pair of two-run homeruns by
Austin Wilkerson and
Brielle Copodonna.
Copodonna also picked up the victory, throwing four innings and improving to 11-8 on the season.
Kayla Smith closed out the game in the circle, allowing just one hit in the final two innings and earned her first save of the season.
The Wildcats look to clinch the top seed in next week's GNAC Tournament in their double header against Simon Fraser tomorrow at Noon.
