Softball Splits to Finish TOC with 4-2 Record

TURLOCK, Calif. (Apr. 3) -- The Central Washington University softball team earned a split on the final day of the Tournament of Champions with a 3-2 win over Cal State East Bay and a 1-3 loss to UC San Diego.

The Wildcats went 4-2 in the TOC finishing with the second best record of Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools as Simon Fraser finished with a 5-1 record.

Central Washington now stands with a 25-10 record on the season.

In the opener the Wildcats scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning on a pair of run scoring singles by Kailyn Campbell and Alexa Olague and a sacrifice fly by Austin Wilkerson that scored Celine Fowler.

Both Campbell and Fowler went 2 for 4 against CSUEB helping the Wildcats outhit their opponents 10-5.

Kiana Wood improved to 15-3 on the season pitching all seven innings after coming in as a relief pitcher in the first inning.  Wood entered the game with the bases loaded and just no outs with CWU trailing 1-0.  Wood induced a double play and a foul out to get the Wildcats out of an early jam.

The junior left-hander allowed just three hits and one run over seven innings of work forcing 14 fly outs in the process.

In the nightcap the Tritons scored three runs on the Wildcats in the bottom of the fifth inning on three hits, which was the difference in the ball game.

Central Washington's lone run came in the top of the seventh inning on a single by Olague that scored Fowler.  The Wildcats had the go-ahead runs on base with two outs, but UCSD forced a pop up to end the game.

The Wildcats recorded seven hits in the ball game with five coming from the duo of Campbell and Olague.

Central Washington returns to GNAC play next weekend when they play host to Montana State Billings on Apr. 8 and 9.
