West Coast 7's: Flawless Day One

10/21/2017 2:02:00 PM

SAN FRANCISCO (Oct. 21) – The Central Washington University men's rugby team took part in the West Coast 7's on Treasure Island and the Wildcats were flawless on day one of the tournament.

QUOTABLE
"I felt the guys did a good job of taking opportunities and playing out of our form," CWU Head Coach Todd Thornley said.  We moved the ball really well, catching the ball was probably the best part of our tact today.  They did well on defense, we've spent the last three weeks or so really working on it and being accountable for their tackles and staying connected.  Very happy with what we did there, but still a few things we can improve on."

"We need to be clinical and execute what we want to execute," Thornley added, in an interview with Rugby 7's Magazine.  "We need play with confidence and be accountable for our tackles.  Sevens rugby is anyone's game and tomorrow will be a battle."

"We came into this tournament and wanted to give effort and everyone gave that," Captain Vili Toluta'u said in an interview with Rugby 7's Magazine.

Opening Fixture – Santa Clara
The Wildcats opened the West Coast 7's with a 31-0 victory over Santa Clara.  Ian Wright, Jack Wendling, and Vili Toluta'u each notched a try.  Cole Zarcone grounded the ball for try twice.  Wright added three conversions as the Wildcats held Santa Clara scoreless.

Second Fixture – Sonoma State
Carlos Gomez motored his way to four tries as the Wildcats routed Sonoma State 50-0.  Zarcone added two more tries to his total, while Wendling and Toluta'u each added another try to their total on the weekend.

Final Fixture – Southern California
For third time on the day the Wildcats held their opponents scoreless.  Scott Dean scooted over the try line twice, as did Dominic Lindstrom.  Gomez, Zarcone, and Toluta'u each added a try as well in the 41-0 victory.

Day Totals
Zarcone and Gomez finished the day with five tries, while Toluta'u picked up three tries.  Adding two tries to their 7's totals were Lindstrom, Dean, and Wendling.  Wright scored once.

Central opens play tomorrow at 10:40 a.m. against UCLA in the Cup Bracket.
