SAN FRANCISCO (Oct. 22) – Cole Zarcone levelled the score twice, before
Scott Dean fought his way over the try line in the Wildcats' 17-15 victory over Arizona in the West Coast 7's Final.
The West Coast 7's is the largest tournament the Wildcats have won, as they defeated Arizona, UCLA, and the 2017 7's National Champion Cal in order to claim the championship.
Arizona fought its way to an early 5-0 lead in the second minute. Four minutes later, Zarcone barreled his way over the try line, levelling the score at 5-5.
Undeterred, Arizona tallied once more. The Wildcats from the Grand Canyon State failed the conversion, however, only taking a 10-5 lead into halftime.
Right off the restart in the second half, Zarcone struck again. Zarcone darted through the middle of the pitch on a long run, grounding the ball underneath the bar.
Ian Wright knocked through the conversion, giving Central Washington a 12-10 lead. Zarcone was named West Coast 7's MVP for his efforts, including 10 tries on the weekend.
As the grew drew towards a close,
Scott Dean took an offload from Zarcone and scooted over the try line expanding Central's lead to 17-10.
Arizona brought the came closer with a try, making it 17-15, but again their conversion missed.
The final 60 seconds of play was grueling for both sides as fatigue began to take its hold. With less than 20 seconds remaining, Arizona was given a lineout. As time expired,
Dominic Lindstrom took off in a foot race with an Arizona attacker with as the ball bounded towards Arizona's offensive try line. Lindstrom won the foot race and held off the attacker as the ball rolled out of the try zone sealing the 17-15 victory.
