LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Central Washington University softball team scored a school-record 21 runs in the opening game of day two at the Desert Stinger defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills 21-3, but lost its second game 3-4 to Cal State Monterey Bay in extra innings.
The Wildcats now sit at 2-2 on the season.
The Wildcats had a historic opening game, where they set three school records, including most runs scored (21), most hits (24), and most runs batted in (20).
Jacie McDaniels continued her hot start with a RBI double in the first, followed by a pair of run scoring singles by
Taylor Ferleman and
Taelor Griffin to take a 3-0 lead.
The Toros battled back to pull to within one run, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning.
The score remained 3-2 heading into the fourth inning where the CWU bats came back to life, erupting for 16 runs on 12 hits.
Kailyn Campbell led the inning off with a solo home run to left center, and seven batters later,
Samantha Gorham pinch hit for Rachel Johnson with the bases loaded and smashed a grand slam over the center field fence. That was Gorham's first at bat as a Wildcat.
12 different batters recorded a hit in the game for the Wildcats, with Campbell, McDaniels,
Savannah Egbert and
Paige Liikala each collecting three.
Bailey Seek saw her first action in the circle for CWU, and pitched two innings, picking up her first win of the season.
In the night cap, the Wildcats and Otters were deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the sixth inning where CSUMB scored three runs in the top half to gain a 3-0 lead over CWU. Central battled back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by McDaniels and a pair of bases loaded walks by Griffin and Egbert to tie the game back up.
The game remained 3-3 heading into extra innings, and with the international tie-breaker in effect, the Otters singled home a run to take a 4-3 advantage. The Wildcats had their chance in the bottom half when Ferleman advanced
Molly Nutt to third on a sacrifice bunt, but the following two batters went down in order, allowing CSUMB to escape with the one run victory.
Kiana Wood pitched the first 5.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and two earned runs.
Kayla Smith tossed the final 2.2 innings giving up one unearned run and picked up the loss moving her to 0-1 on the season.
Central Washington will wrap up its trip to Sin City with a 2 p.m. matchup with the University of Mary.
