ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University softball team got standout performances from third baseman
Savannah Egbert and pitcher
Kiana Wood, and swept Concordia University by scores of 9-2 and 12-9 to extend its winnings steak to 11 games.
The Wildcats now stand at 18-5 on the season and 11-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, while the Cavaliers fall to 12-17, 5-11 in the GNAC.
Egbert went 5 for 6 on the day, scoring four runs and driving in one. Additionally, the freshman picked up five stolen bases, including four in game one, which set a new CWU single game record.
Wood picked up the win in both contests, improving to 9-1 on the season. In the opener, the senior allowed just two hits, both of which came in the first inning. During the homestand, Wood went 3-0 in the circle and picked up a save.
Central Washington went down 0-2 in the first inning of game one, but rallied back in the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Egbert and
Kailyn Campbell each had run scoring hits in the frame.
After adding another run in the fourth innings, the Wildcats tacked on four more in the fifth on a three-run homerun by
Taelor Griffin, followed by a solo shot from
Kayla Ellis. Griffin's longball was the first of her career.
Egbert walked to lead off the sixth inning, stole second and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Wildcats the final 9-2 lead.
Central Washington started early in game two, scoring three in the first on a RBI double by
Jacie McDaniels, and a pair of run scoring singles by
Taylor Ferleman and
Celine Fowler.
Concordia added four runs in the top of the fourth inning on a two RBI single by Taylor Bussey, and a two-run homerun by Courtney Somers. The Wildcats answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a grandslam by
Kailyn Campbell to take a 7-4 lead.
Griffin drove home a run in the fifth on a single to centerfield, and CWU added four more runs in the sixth on run scoring hits by McDaniels, Ferleman and
Julia Reuble. Down 12-7 in the seventh inning, Concordia rallied to piece together two runs, but Wood slammed the door on the Cavaliers, giving CWU the final 12-9 advantage.
Central Washington will next travel to Turlock, California where they square off with Stanislaus State on Mar. 29 before playing six games at the Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State on Mar. 31-Apr. 2.
