PROVO, Utah (Mar. 31) – The Central Washington University men's rugby fell to Brigham Young University 55-12.
The Wildcats got on the board first with a try from
Jeremy Lenaerts.
The Cougars responded quickly, but missed their conversion, and the Wildcats clung to a 7-5 lead. Another missed kick by BYU later in the first half kept the Wildcats on top 7-5, but the Cougars found the offensive and went over the try line. They ended the first half leading 24-.7.
"A great start by our guys," CWU Head Coach
Todd Thornley said. "Tonight, however, crucial errors on both sides of the ball gave BYU momentum. Once they get momentum they are a class team and they showed how dangerous they can be on any sort of foot or counterattack ball."
Brigham Young University kept its form in the second half, scoring four consecutive tries, before
Tresten Keys gave the Wildcats their second try.
The Cougars added another try before the final whistle for a 55-12 victory.
"Full credit to BYU," Thornley added. "They were a class above us tonight and showed why they have won multiple national championships. We weren't good enough to compete for 80 minutes tonight, so we must be critical of our performance and take this opportunity to grow as a team. How we respond from this moment will dictate our success in our postseason coming up."
The Wildcats now look towards the Varsity Cup in the first weekend of April.
