SEATTLE, Wash. (Feb. 3) – Cole Zarcone and
Will Brennan netted hat tricks as the Central Washington University men's rugby team rolled over the University of Washington, 77-0.
Zarcone and Brennan scored three times, while
Jack Wendling,
Alex Mackenzie, Chachi Lotulelei,
John Dupree,
Max Riseham, Tom Kalili, and
Jake Szumski each scored once. Szumski added six conversions. Zarcone compiled his first natural hat trick of the season, as all of his tries came in the first half.
"Happy to see our youngsters get a run today against a committed UW side," CWU Head Coach
Todd Thornley said afterward. "When we focused on executing the small details the big picture looked a lot better however there was still a lot of inconsistency in our play today. We had some excellent workmates from the likes of Chachi and
Makani Mafua up front, and glimpses of individual brilliance from the likes of
Jack Wendling,
Jackson Cooley and
Cole Zarcone, It bodes well for the rest of this season and also the future of Wildcat rugby."
Central's offense got going early. In the sixth minute, Zarcone plunged over the line for his first try of the contest.
Mackenzie found the try line four minutes later with Szumski adding the conversion. Wendling found the try line five minutes after Mackenzie and, once again, Szumski added the conversion. Zarcone scored in the 20
th minute, before Lotulelei scored in the 26
th minute. Brennan added a try in the 31
st minute, before Zarcone capped the first half scoring in the 36
th minute. Szumski added his third conversion on Zarcone's final try. The Wildcats led 41-0 at the half.
Riseham started the scoring in the second half, scoring in the 50
th minute. DuPree scored in the 60
th minute, before Kalili tacked on another try five minutes later. Szumski, who had knocked through four conversions already, found his way in for a try in the 70
th minute and added his fifth conversion.
Brennan then scored back-to-back tries in the 73
rd and 76
th minutes for the 77-0 victory.
The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 17). They take on Valley RFC in Seattle; kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
