TURLOCK, Calif. – After a day one split at the Tournament of Champions that ended the Wildcats 10-game winning streak, the Central Washington University softball team bounced back with a day-two sweep over Cal State San Marcos and Notre Dame De Namur by scores of 7-6 and 9-1, respectively.
With the pair of victories, the Wildcats are now 17-5 on the season.
The Wildcats outhit their opponents 22-8 on the day, led by
Katie Kastning who went 3 for 5 with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Fellow freshman
Theresa Moyle also had three hits on the day going 3 for 4 with two RBI.
Lexie Strasser earned the victory in both outings despite pitching just 4.2 innings on the day. Strasser picked up a relief win in game one to secure the 7-6 win and started in the circle in the night cap going three innings allowing just one hit and no runs. Strasser is now 9-4 on the season.
GAME ONE, 7-6 win over Cal State San Marcos
The Wildcats scored all their runs in the opening two innings, starting with a four run first. Kastning picked up a RBI single that placed
Celine Fowler, and Moyle drove home Kastning three batters later on a single through the left side. The Cougars committed three errors in the frame, resulting in four unearned runs.
Up 4-2 in the bottom of the second, the Wildcats took advantage of sloppy defense by CSUSM, scoring three times in the frame with Bannan driving home two on a base hit, followed by a sacrifice fly by
Taelor Griffin.
The Cougars mounted a comeback with a single run in the fourth innings, followed by a three-run sixth to pull within one of the Wildcats at 7-6. Strasser entered late in the sixth inning to shut the door on CSUSM and secure the CWU victory.
GAME TWO, 9-1 win over Notre Dame De Namur (5 innings)
Central wasted no time jumping all over the Argonauts, scoring seven runs in the first two innings. Kastning singled and came around to score on a Bannan fielder's choice as the Wildcats went ahead 1-0 in the first inning.
In the second, CWU pushed around six runs on six hits, highlighted by a Kastning two-run triple to right field.
The lead was much needed as the game was suspended for around three hours due to rain with the Wildcats leading 9-1. When play resumed,
Kayla Smith continued to pitch in relief of Strasser and gave up just one run over two innings of work and struck out four batters in the process to hold on to the 9-1 win.
