ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Central Washington sophomore
Taylor Williams earned her first-career no-hitter helping the softball team to a split with Western Washington University Sunday afternoon at Frederick Field.
The Wildcats fell 1-3 in game one and responded with an 8-0 shutout in game two as Williams stole the show.
Williams used just 63 pitches, 12.6 per inning, including an eight pitch second inning. Outside of her two walks, Williams was flawless, inducing eight groundouts to go along with four strikeouts. The Brea, Calif. native improved to 4-1 on the season. She becomes the sixth Wildcats to record a no-hitter and the fifth to do so in a five inning game.
The CWU offense made Williams comfortable by scoring a run in each inning, including a four run third inning.
Katie Kastning got the scoring started in game two plating
Savannah Egbert on a sac fly in the first inning followed by a RBI single by
Bethany Balucan in the second to put the Wildcats up 2-0.
The game broke open in the CWU half of the third inning where the Wildcats tallied six hits in the frame.
Julia Reuble singled home Kastning early in the inning and
Alycia Bannan hit the ensuing pitch to left field plating pinch-running
Hannah Spero on the play. Three batters later, Balucan drove in the final two runs on a double to left center just out the reach of the Vikings left fielder to give the Wildcats a commanding 6-0 lead.
Sydney Brown capped off the scoring efforts for the Wildcats in the fourth scoring two runs on a double to right center field.
Brown finished the weekend 5 for 10 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
Game one saw the Wildcats leave nine runners on base, including four in scoring position scoring just once in the contest.
Shearyna Labasan gave the Vikings their biggest boost of the game in the third inning battling back from being down 0-2 to lift a homerun to left field, putting WWU up 2-0.
Savannah Egbert continued to lead the Wildcats going 2 for 4 in the game and finished the weekend batting .417 with five hits, four runs scored and three stolen bases. With her three swipes this weekend, Egbert is now tied with teammate
Rachael Johnson for the CWU all-time lead with 49.
The Wildcats wrap up the final four games of the 2018 regular season when they travel to Lacey, Wash. to take on Saint Martin's next Saturday Apr. 28, followed by a Sunday matchup at home starting at Noon.
