Egbert's Game-Winner Powers Softball to Sweep of SFU

BURNABY, British Columbia Canada – Sophomore third baseman Savannah Egbert hit a game-winning two-run single in the top of the ninth inning as the Central Washington University softball team defeated Simon Fraser 8-7 in game two securing the two-game sweep of the Clan.

The Wildcats, who improve to 24-9 on the season and 12-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, beat the clan 5-1 in the opener behind strong pitching from Lexie Strasser and a long homerun by Theresa Moyle.

The Wildcats outhit the Clan 25-16 on the day, led by Egbert who went 6 for 10 with four runs batted in.

In game one, the Wildcats broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when Egbert drove home Bethany Balucan on a single to right field, and Celine Fowler followed with a run scoring single to right centerfield.  Moyle got hit by a pitch, for the second time, with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth to add to the CWU lead, pushing the Wildcats' advantage to 4-0.

Moyle got payback in the top of the seventh inning, crushing her second homerun of the season to dead centerfield, adding an insurance run for the Wildcats.

Strasser shut down the SFU offense, giving up just two hits and using 65 pitches in the complete game shutout.  Strasser took a no hitter into the fifth inning for the fourth time this season.

In game two, Jacie McDaniels jumped all over a first-inning offering, driving home three runs on her first homerun of the season.

The Clan battled back in the bottom half of the first scoring three runs on four hits to level the match at 3-3.

Simon Fraser gained a 4-3 edge with a run in the third before the Wildcats pieced together two runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of RBI singles by Rachael Johnson and Egbert to take a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, SFU loaded the bases with just one out as CWU went to Taylor Williams in relief.  Williams struck out the first batter she faced and forced a ground out to work the Wildcats out of the jam.

Samantha Gorham added one more run to the CWU lead with a run scoring single in the sixth plating Hanna Spero on the play.

Simon Fraser battled back in the bottom half of the sixth with a double, followed by a triple and a passed ball to tie the game at 6-6.

In the top of the ninth, Balucan singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Johnson followed with an infield single and stole second to give CWU two runners in scoring position with no outs.  Egbert hit a screaming groundball off the glove of the third baseman as both runners scored on the play.

The Clan made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring once and stranding two runners, but Strasser shut the door on the Clan securing the 8-7 win and picked up her 15 victory of the season (15-4).  Strasser started game two in the circle but was relieved by Kayla Smith in the SFU three-run first inning.  Smith went 3.2 innings allowing three hits and just one run.

The Wildcats return to action this week when they travel to Nampa, Idaho for a four-game series with Northwest Nazarene starting on Friday, Apr. 13.
