Wildcats Thrash Aggies in 2019 Opener

DAVIS, Calif. (Jan. 3) — The Central Washington University men's rugby team scored 36 unanswered points twice en route to a 72-14 victory over UC Davis.

"Some great pieces of rugby tonight against a physical UC Davis side," CWU Head Coach Todd Thornley said afterward.  "Collectively we stuck to our shape on both sides of the ball and put together some nice pieces of rugby.  Now we need to win the recovery and prepare for a big challenge Saturday."

The Wildcats' captain, Alex Mackenzie, scored the first try of the game before vice captain Cole Zarcone gave the Crimson and Black a two-try lead.

Following a try from Vanya Sturm, Makani Mafua scored two of the Wildcats' next three tries, sandwiching a try from Riley Schell in between.

The Aggies were able to score consecutive tries before Jake Szumski made his way over the try line to put Central up 41-14.

Kawika Macy and Diego Damian-Hernandez followed suit and scored tries of their own, before Jack Wendling found his way in for his first try of the contest.  Mafua then added his third try for the hat trick and a 67-14 advantage.

The final try of the fixture was scored by John Dupree.

Conversions were knocked through by: Henry Foster (3) and Lewis Hollidge (3).

Central Washington is back in action on Saturday (Jan. 5) for a fixture at No. 4 Saint Mary's College.  Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
