Wildcats Climb Past Mountaineers Before Rain Washes Out Second Game

Portland, Ore. (FEB. 23) - The second day of the Cavalier Classic belonged to the Central Washington University softball team, as they picked up a 10-2 win over Eastern Oregon in the morning before their contest with Simpson was called due to rain.

"All in all, it was a pretty solid day," CWU head coach Mike Larabee said. "Sam pitched really well, it was a solid outing. The team swung the bat well. Hopefully we get a break in the weather and get to play tomorrow."

The Wildcat (7-3) offense struck gold against the Mountaineers (1-8) in the third inning. The bases were loaded when Alycia Bannan smashed a singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Savannah Egbert and Rachael Johnson

The Wildcats turned to a bit of small ball, as Maddy Zerr was able to put the ball in play, grounding out to the third base. Katie Kastning was able to hustle to the plate to score. Shortly after, Kayla Smith smacked a sacrifice fly to center field to score Bannan. At the end of the third inning, the Wildcats led 6-2.

The Wildcats would score four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. They'd hang onto their eight run lead to finish the game in five innings. Samantha Stanfield (3-1) was in the circle for the Wildcats, pitching the entire game. She struck out four batters and allowed just one earned run.

The Wildcats were scheduled for a game against Simpson University in the evening. Unfortunately, the rain came down and washed out the game between the Wildcats and the Redhawks. The two teams made it to the fourth inning before the game was called. The game failed to reach the fifth inning, meaning it will not count as an official game.

"Taylor Williams pitched well despite the on and off downpour," Larabee said. "I was really proud of our team in the second game. They didn't make excuses even though the conditions weren't ideal. They kept a good attitude and fought hard. They were disappointed the game was called."

The Wildcats take on Corban tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. in their final game of the Cavalier Classic.
