GREENVILLE, SC – The Central Washington University women's rugby team traveled to South Carolina for the semi-final round of the D1 Elite National Championship against Lindenwood University.
The Lions hosted the Wildcats on February 23 and disposed of the Wildcats 39-5 in their second match up of the season.
The matchup today was somewhat similar to the first outing between the two teams. Lindenwood started the scoring and didn't look back. The Lions dominated both ends of the pitch and went on to win the game.
The Wildcats were able to ground a single try to avoid the shutout. "The better team won today," CWU Head Coach
Trevor Richards said. "From the coaches' standpoint, it was a frustrating game to watch. We showed glimpses of the way we can play but overall we failed to show intent and we couldn't consistently execute our structure."
Lindenwood was able to capitalize on these issues and advanced to the next round of playoffs with a 70-5 victory over the Wildcats.
"You have to be 100% on to compete with Lindenwood and it seemed like half the team went on a mental spring break for part of the game," said Richards. "The upside is that we had some gutsy performances from a few players, namely Jo Moreira and
Bianca Ortiz-Pallen, who were relentless from beginning to end. This isn't the way we want to end our 15s campaign, especially for those seniors, but all we can do now is learn from this, let the bodies heal, and get stuck into 7's in April."
