SEATTLE, Wash. (MAR. 9) – The Central Washington University men's rugby team traveled to Seattle, Washington to take on the Seattle Saracens on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats speared the Saracens 48-5.
"Always great to take on some alumni and play a quality club like the Seattle Saracens," CWU head coach Todd Thornley said. "We were scratchy and struggled at times to deal with their physicality and pressure they exerted. A ton of learnings as we continue to move forward and look forward to next week,"
The fixture opened with a bang for the Wildcats (6-1) when Siddique Newkirk took the opening kick-off to the crib for the first try of the game. Newkirk's return gave the Wildcats a quick 5-0 lead.
The lead doubled when Max Riseham hustled in for a try, making it 10-0 Wildcats. The Saracens answered with a try of their own, but it would be their only try of the match. Riseham put together another try, capped by a conversion from Henry Foster. The try and kick gave the Wildcats a 17-5 lead.
After a scrum near midfield, Noah Wright was able to loop around and touch the ball down for a try. The move gave the Wildcats a 22-5 lead going into halftime.
The Wildcats matched their intensity from the first half in the second half. Tresten Keys clobbered the ball in for a try. Foster would make the conversion kick, pushing the Wildcat lead to 29-5. Later, Kawika Macy was able to sneak the ball in for a try. Foster was able to convert the kick again, putting the Wildcats up 36-5.
Jonah Auvaa scampered in for a try for the Wildcats. Foster nailed the conversion to give the Wildcats a 41-5 lead. The Wildcats final score took place when Macy took advantage of a scrum to score. Another Foster conversion gave the Wildcats their final score of the game as they'd take it 48-5.
The Wildcats host Utah Valley University on Saturday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m. inside Tomlinson Stadium.
