TUCSON, Ariz. (Apr. 13) – The Central Washington University men's rugby team fell to the University of Arizona in the D1A National Championships Round of 16, 28-19.
The Arizona Wildcats built a 13-0 lead just 25 minutes into the contest. They recorded two penalty goals and a converted try.
Alex Mackenzie put the Central Washington Wildcats on the board in the 31
st minute with a try built off multiple phases.
Reuben Ludick added the conversion.
Arizona scored the next try, extending their lead back to 13 at 20-7. Arizona scored again 25-7 as the final score before halftime.
"This hurts us big time, we just couldn't get anything going from set piece and if you can't win ball you can't win rugby games," CWU Head Coach
Todd Thornley said. "I appreciate the effort and our seniors who are moving on after leading the way in the change of culture that is occurred over the past three years. Credit to Arizona they handled the big moments much better than we did."
Henry Foster started the scoring in the second half, picking up a try in the 43
rd minute on a team built try.
Diego Damian-Hernandez found the try zone next with
Lewis Hollidge adding the conversion.
Arizona picked up a penalty goal to add insurance and take a 28-19 advantage and the final score line.
