LAFAYETTE, Colo. - USA Rugby and Head Coach Scott Bracken have announced its 33-players that will make up the 2020 USA Men's Under-20 team. Making the squad are a trio of Wildcats from Central University men's rugby.
Making the team for the Crimson and Black are sophomores
Jonah Auvaa and
Alexander Cleary, along with freshman
Cam Nelson. These Wildcats make of three of 20 players that will represent the United States from the collegiate ranks. The 20 college players make up over 60% of the 33-man roster for USA Rugby.
"Congratulations to our three student-athletes on making the team! This is a testament to not only the hard work they put in this year but also their teammates to make our environment as competitive as possible which only helps everyone's development," CWU Head Coach
Todd Thornley said. "Alex, Cam and Jonah are part of a young exciting core of talent returning next year to ensure we build on our 8-0 2020 season. We have a proud history of Wildcats playing on the international stage and I cannot wait to see these three continue that chapter in our program".
The USA Under-20s were originally set to play in the inaugural Men's U20 Americas Rugby Championship. While the competition was postponed due to COVID-19, World Rugby continues to evaluate the climate for an opportunity to host the event later this year.
If the U20 ARC is to be canceled entirely, USA Rugby High Performance will seek alternative competitions, in line with World Rugby's return to play protocol, to give all athletes an opportunity to represent the United States.
