Despite Challenges, Wildcat Athletics Shows Great Success in the Classroom

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Despite all the challenges that were thrown toward Central Washington University and Wildcat Athletics during COVID-19, student-athletes continued their academic success and finished the 2019-20 academic year with a department GPA above 3.0 yet again.

CWU Athletics closed out the academic year with a cumulative GPA of 3.36 and in the spring quarter alone the Crimson and Black posted a 3.53 GPA despite the majority of the quarter being moved to all online sessions in late March.

"I am so proud of the way our student-athletes pushed forward through all the difficulty this year brought. This was a challenging experience for many of us. However, it was exciting to watch our student-athletes rise to the occasion,"  Freedman-Remak Student-Athlete Academic Success Coordinator Mal Stewman said. "I also cannot say enough about the work our coaches did to maintain connection and academic accountability with the members of their respective teams. Together, we got to watch our student-athletes accomplish something really special."

The Wildcats efforts in the classroom showed throughout the entire year as all 13 sports programs posted a 3.0 team GPA or higher in at least two of the three quarters. All 13 teams did post a 3.0 GPA or higher for the spring quarter as well.

Taking home the highest cumulative GPA for the 2019-20 academic year for women was volleyball who posted a final GPA of 3.66. Leading the way for the men's squads was rugby who finished with a 3.37 GPA for the year.
