Moyle, Benthagen Homer as Womack Shines in 10-2 Win Over HSU

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – A pair of home runs and a strong outing from Isabel Womack in the circle propelled the Central Washington University softball (13-10) to a 10-2 win over Humboldt State University (8-6).

"Really enjoyed seeing player's make adjustments on their own in the batter's box," CWU Head Coach Alison Mitchell said. "We started swinging at not-great pitches early, but did a good job laying off those the next time through the lineup and barreling balls up."

Womack (2-1) tossed a complete game and allowed just two unearned runs on six hits. She also struck out six hitters.

"Izzy was great," Mitchell noted. "She's coming back from a little bit of a calf thing and just having her out here today and having that confidence in the circle where she tied up a team who hit us pretty well yesterday, it was great to see her confidence."

Central Washington opened the scoring in the first on an RBI groundout from Myiah Seaton, scoring Allie Thiessen. Harlee Carpenter then came around on a wild pitch, making 2-0 Wildcats.

A throwing error in the top of the second inning brought two around for Humboldt State, before a single scored another, tying the contest at 2-2. Womack struck out Emily McAdams swinging to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third inning Theresa Moyle took a one-out offering over the wall in left center for a two-run blast, giving the Crimson and Black a 4-2 lead. Womack set two hitters down by way of the K in the fourth, keeping the 'Jacks off the scoreboard again.

The Wildcats notched another run in the fourth. A two-out error allowed Sydney Williams to score for a 5-2 advantage.

After a scoreless top of the fifth, Central's offense went back to work. Seaton led off with a single to left, prompting a pitching change for Humboldt State. The first batter Megan Holt faced, Alycia Bannan, roped a double down the left field line to drive around Seaton. Sydney Brown followed with a single of her own, scoring Bannan from second.

Humboldt State went to the bullpen again, calling on Megan Escobar to douse the flames. She retired the first batter she saw with a flyout but Alyssa Benthagen got the better of her, launching a two-run blast to give the 'Cats a 9-2 advantage.

"It was great to see her get that," Mitchell added. "She's been working hard and I know she's been frustrated with some of the outcomes but she was one of the hitters making adjustements during her at-bats and you can't ask for more than that."

Two batters later, Thiessen drew a walk and scored the walk-off run on a double to left center from Carpenter.

Thiessen and Carpenter both scored two runs, while eight different Wildcats crossed the plate. Eight different players also recorded at least one hit on the day with Benthagen finishing a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish. Benthagen and Moyle both drove in a pair of runs.

Central Washington is back at home for a four-game GNAC series against Northwest Nazarene next weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm on both Friday (Apr.16) and 1:00 PM on Saturday (Apr. 17).
