ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University softball team split its doubleheader against Humboldt State 9-1 and 13-3.
QUOTABLE
"We had good confidence in the plate and were attacking pitches in our zone [in game one]," CWU Head Coach
Alison Mitchell said. "Gracee looked really confident and smooth in the box. In game two, it's us riding the high and lows of the game and us trying to stay level, trusting what we do at the plate, and taking a deep breath after a team has a big inning. Keep it realistic at the plate and work to start things off with just a base hit."
GAME ONE | Humboldt State 1, Central Washington 9
Gracee Dwyer led the way for the Wildcats in the front end of the twin bill. She drove in five runs, pacing the 'Cats offense.
Samantha Stanfield (3-3) earned another complete game victory.
After Humboldt opened the scoring with a run in the first, Central's offense went to work in the bottom half of the inning. A sacrifice fly from
Theresa Moyle brought
Harlee Carpenter in from third, tying the game at 1-1.
Alyssa Benthagen then doubled home
Maddy Zerr to make it 2-1. After a single from
Sydney Brown put two runners aboard Dwyer clubbed a three-run bomb to give the 'Cats a 5-1 advantage. A two-out walk from Stanfield came as a boon to the Wildcats, as she was driven in on a single from
Allie Thiessen.
Central's offense wasn't done. Brown doubled home Zerr in the second inning, making it 7-1, before Dwyer roped a two-run double to put the Wildcats ahead 9-1.
Stanfield allowed just four hits and struck out three. Zerr, Benthagen, and Brown each scored a pair of runs.
GAME TWO | Humboldt State 13, Central Washington 3
The Jacks' offense picked up a pair of runs in the opening frame of game two on a well-placed bunt and a single to left.
Dwyer responded by driving in
Myiah Seaton with a single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 2-1, in the bottom of the second.
Izzy Starr notched a two-run home run for the Jacks in the top of the third. Humboldt State added another with a sacrifice bunt later in the inning, making it 5-1.
Humboldt's offense exploded for seven runs in the fourth. A pair of two-run singles, a two-run double, and single up the middle helped guide the Jacks' offense to a crooked number.
Central's offense responded with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Brown brought around Seaton with a single to center before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher, who was trying to throw Dwyer out on a stolen base, to make it 12-3.
JoAna Mullins singled home the Jacks' final run in the top of the fifth, bringing the score to 13-3.
Thiessen recorded a pair of hits, accounting for a third of the Wildcats' total. Seaton scored two runs and drew a walk, finishing 1-for-1 at the plate.
