IRVINE, Calif. – The Central Washington University softball team fell in an elimination game, 9-2, to Concordia Irvine.
"I'm very proud of my team. We kept our energy up all game," CWU Head Coach
Alison Mitchell said. "It was just a day where the softball gods didn't shine on us. They only hit a few balls out of the infield and the ones in the infield caught us out of position."
Samantha Stanfield (6-6) took to the circle in the Wildcats' second do or die game of the Regional. She allowed just three runs over four innings but was charged with the loss.
The Eagles' offense struck with a two-run home run in the top of the second inning. An inning later,
Theresa Moyle got the Wildcats' scoring started.
Allie Thiessen slapped a one-out single through the left side and
Harlee Carpenter followed with a single of her own. Moyle then doubled down the right field line, scoring Thiessen.
Maddy Zerr lifted a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Carpenter to score and levelling the score at 2-2.
Irvine found the go-ahead run in the next half inning, however. A bases loaded infield single put the Eagles ahead and they did not look back. They added a pair of runs in the sixth, before a three-run home run in the seventh put the game away.
"I thought we represented the GNAC well as we were the last time standing, proved we could compete with the top teams in our region, and have a single-minded focus to be back next year," Mitchell added. "I'm very proud of this senior class, they had to deal with a lot in a short period of time. They are a big reason why our team could face such overwhelming adversity and still be ready to compete."
Carpenter finished with a pair of hits and scored one run. Moyle and Zerr had the only RBI for the 'Cats.
Central Washington entered as the No. 6 seed and was the last remaining GNAC team, eliminating No. 4 Western Washington and outlasting No. 3 Northwest Nazarene.
