TUCSON, Ariz. – Central Washington University softball closed out the Desert Stinger with a 6-0 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Wildcats (1-4) managed just two hits off Toros' (9-2) starter Alyssa Olague (6-1). She tossed a complete game and struck out six.
Rhaney Harris (0-3) was tagged with the loss. She allowed six runs, four earned, on 10 hits. Harris struck out three before being relieved by
Makayla Miller.
Alyssa Benthagen had the 'Cats only hits. Her first hit came in the bottom of the second, a single to the right side. Central was set down in order in all but the second and seventh innings.
Harris worked out a jam in the first inning, forcing a ground out to end the inning and strand a pair of runners. She forced the Toros to strand a pair more in the second. She also worked around a jam in the fifth inning, retiring the first two hitters before allowing consecutive hits. Harris rolled another ground ball to retire the side.
The Toros pushed their first run in the second inning. A three-run home run in the sixth gave bolstered their advantage. A one-out single up the middle gave the Toros their first runner of the inning. Maiya Lopez then worked the count full before drawing a walk. Katelyn Sturm took full advantage of the runners with a three-run big fly.
Dominguez Hills struck again the top of the seventh. Three straight singles to open the inning chased Harris from the game, the third single from Raquel Jaime drove the first run of the inning across. With runners on the corners, a snap throw to third sailed into the outfield and allowed the second run of the inning to score. Miller retired the first three hitters she faced to end the Toros' offense.
Trailing by six, Benthagen roped a double in the final frame, but Olague kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard to preserve the 6-0 win.
Central Washington plays at Saint Martin's on February 25 for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
