TUCSON, Ariz.—One week after a tough loss at home, Central Washington men's rugby took out its frustrations on No. 13 Arizona as the No. 7 Wildcats rolled to a 60-13 victory on the road Saturday.
After suffering a 22-17 loss last weekend to No. 6 BYU, the Wildcats overcame the heat and a tough opponents to get back in the win column.
"This is a great road win for us today, playing in front of a good crowd in the heat against a good Arizona side," CWU head coach
Todd Thornley said. "The score line does not reflect how hard we had to work at times today, which I am very proud of the improvements we made after a disappointing performance last week."
Drew Farrington put the Wildcats on the board early, with the game's first try in the seventh minute. Oliver Dryhsen followed five minutes later with another try and after a conversion by
Lewis Hollidge, the Wildcats owned a 12-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later Connor Grande scored and after
Noah Wright's conversion was successful, Central owned a 22-0 advantage. The route was effectively on.
Kenny Pasion and
Cam Nelson registered trys before halftime as the Wildcats took a 34-8 lead into the break.
Robb,
Albert O'Shannessey,
Clint Lyman, and Marques Fula'au all had trys in the second half to put the game away.
While the Wildcats (5-1) will celebrate a big road victory, Central's upcoming schedule doesn't get any easier. The Wildcats next host top-ranked Saint Mary's.
"Our road forward only gets tougher, so we must use this momentum and continue to grow in all areas of our game, particularly our ability to stay disciplined defensively for long periods of play," Thornley said. "We look forward to being back at home next week where a massive challenge awaits us."
The Wildcats and Gaels are set to meet Noon, Saturday, March 5 at Tomlinson Stadium.
