ELLENSBURG, Wash.—A flurry of trys early in the second half helped lift Central Washington to a 50-14 win against Seattle Rugby Club, Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium.
The win not only improved the Wildcats to 6-3 overall, but also made winners out of seniors
John Dupree,
Lewis Hollidge,
Ivan Pula and
Jack Wendling, who were all playing in their final regular season home match.
The Wildcats won by a wide margin, but they had to rally after a slow start. Central trailed, 14-10, at halftime despite trys by Connor Grande and
Oscar Treacy.
Following a sloppy first half by the Wildcats, CWU head coach
Todd Thornley had a spirited conversation with his side at halftime.
"I looked at them and asked them what they expected me to say right now," Thornley said. "So, I made a couple of changes and simply told them we have to hold on to the ball, and we had to tackle. And we did those things in the second half, and it made a tremendous difference."
Mitchell Hirose started the scoring spree in the 43
rd minute, and the conversion from
Jack Tregoning put the Wildcats up, 17-14.
Treacy found the try line for the second time in the 49
th minute for a 22-14 lead, and Tregoning nailed the conversion to make it 24-14.
Tregoning found the try line on his own in the 54
th minute but missed the conversion on a wind-swept day. The try gave the Wildcats at 29-14 advantage.
Lewis Hollidge,
Samson Dwyer, and
Drew Farrington capped the scoring as the Wildcats ran away in the second half.
"I'm so happy to send the seniors out with a win," Thornley said. "They deserve it. They are fantastic guys. The beauty of collegiate athletics is seeing where they are when they get here against where they end up. To be a part of that journey has been awesome."
Central closes out the regular season when the Wildcats visit Army, 11 a.m., Saturday, March 26 at West Point, N.Y.
