WEST POINT, N.Y.—A flurry of trys by No. 3 Army midway through the first half proved to be the difference as the Black Knights handed No. 7 Central Washington a 39-27 setback on Saturday.
"We improved today against a very well coached talented Army team who are on a roll right now," CWU head coach
Todd Thornley said. "Big moments were again not taken by us and we allowed Army to gain momentum from those moments. It's been of season of us making crucial mistakes at crucial times but there are some positives with our performance improving considerably over time. we have high hopes that we have a positive playoff experience from these great learnings which we should hear about very soon."
Things started off well for the Wildcats, as
Campbell Robb crossed the try line in the third minute.
Jack Tregoning connected on the conversion and Wildcats held a 7-0 lead.
After a penalty kick, a try and conversion gave Army a 10-7 lead, the Wildcats converted a PK of their own in the 15
th minute as Tregoning's attempt was true, tying the match at 10.
Jack Wendling gave the Wildcats their second lead of the day with a try in the 21
st minute. Tregoning once again was on the mark with the kick, and Central held a 17-10 lead.
But that would prove to be the final lead of the day for the Wildcats. Between the 25
th and 38
th minutes, the Black Knights turned a 7-point deficit into a 29-17 lead thanks to three straight trys.
Central stopped the bleeding early in the second half when
Conner Grande crossed the try line. Tregoning converted again to make it a 29-24 Army lead.
Another try and one more penalty kick for Army helped swell the Black Knights' lead to 37-24.
Samson Dwyer capped the scoring for the day with a try in the game's final minute.
The postseason is next for the Wildcats, as they expect to learn their opponent and match location next week. The D1A Playoffs begin on April 9.
