QUOTING HEAD COACH TODD THORNLEY:
"After a few weeks of training hard, we are excited that the playoffs are here and the new challenges they will present. BYU are a very impressive side that will require us to be at our best on Saturday. If we can focus on doing the little things really well and working hard for each other then we will have a chance. We cannot wait to play this massive clash at home in front of our friends, family, and fans."
ABOUT THE MATCHUP:
The #1 Wildcats earned the highest seed in the West Region of the College Rugby Association of America's (CRAA) D1A postseason after an outstanding regular season in which the team earned its highest ranking in program history. The team earned a bye into the quarterfinals.
But the Crimson and Black have an opportunity to make a statement in their opening matchup. BYU landed CWU its only loss in the regular season back on Mar. 18 in Provo, Utah by a score of 23-24. In the loss, the Wildcats had many opportunities to get the ever-elusive victory, but with multiple disallowed tries in the final minutes, the 'Cats couldn't get it done.
The fourth-seeded Cougars found their way to Ellensburg thanks to a dominant 71-33 performance against #5 Arizona last Saturday, Apr. 8, in the opening round of the D1A postseason.
The Cougars have also had a strong regular season. This spring, they own a 6-1 record with their only loss coming to St. Mary's in Moraga, Calif. on Mar. 4.
Historically, BYU has CWU's number. In 11 all-time matchups, the Wildcats have only come out on top once back in 2020.
