#5 Wildcats Dismantle #15 Mustangs 41-20

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The #5 Central Washington University men's rugby team took care of business Saturday afternoon, defeating the #15 Cal Poly Mustangs by a final score of 41-20 on the road.

QUOTING HEAD COACH TODD THORNLEY:
  • "It was pleasing to see us start well and play consistent rugby on both sides of the ball for the first 50 minutes. Credit to Cal Poly, they dominated the last 30 minutes and we held on for a solid win. We look forward to getting home and continually improving as the year goes on."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Shortly after kickoff, Campbell Robb put the Wildcats on the board, gifting the Crimson and Black an early 5-0 lead.
  • Daniel McQuade added to the tally in the 10th minute, followed by a successful Jac Tregoning conversion to make it 12-0.
  • Cal Poly converted a penalty attempt in the 18th minute, narrowing the CWU lead to 12-3.
  • In the 23rd minute, Tiai Vavao earned another try for the Wildcats. The lead expanded to 17-3.
  • Five minutes before halftime, Isaiah Simera-Saldana beat seven defenders from 35 meters out to lift the Wildcats to a 22-3 halftime lead.
  • Out of the break, Simera-Saldana grabbed his second straight try with another conversion from Tregoning. The Mustangs converted another penalty kick, but a first career try from Jaiden Beer lifted the score to 34-6.
  • Cal Poly built some momentum, scoring a pair of tries and successful conversions to close the CWU lead to 36-20.
  • Christopher Grosse added the Wildcats' final try of the day to make it 41-20, solidifying the final result for CWU.
UP NEXT:
  • The Wildcats (4-1) will return to Tomlinson Stadium for a nationally ranked top-five matchup against #4 Saint Mary's, beginning a seven-match home streak, scheduled for next Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11:00 a.m.
