Wildcats Sink Pirates to Open Homestand

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Central Washington University softball team swept the Whitworth Pirates in a nonconference doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

GAME 1
 
SCORING: 
 
  • Alyssa Benthagen put the 'Cats on the board early in the bottom of the first inning when she doubled to right center field to score Makenna King and make it 1-0 CWU. 
  • The Wildcats kept it rolling in the first inning when Anna Fridell singled to left center field to score Jillian Hampson and Benthagen and make it 3-0 CWU. 
  • Still in the first inning, Kate Hopkins singled to left field to score Laney Kaysner which was followed by Karsyn Decker doubling down the left field line to score Hopkins and Fridell and make it 6-0 Wildcats to end the first inning. 
  • Whitworth put themselves on the board in the top of the second inning when Lizzy Bradford singled to right field to score Haley Lyman and make it 6-1 CWU. 
  • The Pirates struck again in the top of the fourth when Reagan Ellis reached on a fielder's choice allowing enough time to score Bradford and a throwing error scored Kennedy Robison to cut the Wildcat lead in half 6-3. 
  • CWU struck once more in the bottom of the fifth inning when Decker reached first on a bunt to score Fridell and make it 7-3 'Cats.
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Olivia Ross pitched the first 4.1 innings allowing 14 hits and three runs one of which was earned while getting three strikeouts against 25 batters. 
  • Amelia Roberts made her Wildcat debut pitching 2.2 innings allowing one hit and one walk against eight batters. 
  • Corinne Vasiloff pitched the full six innings for Whitworth allowing 10 hits, seven runs, and three walks while striking out five against 33 batters. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished with 10 hits led by Hopkins and Decker each with two. 
  • King, Benthagen, Kaysner, Fridell, Heidi Heytvelt, and Serena Perez all recorded one hit apiece. 
  • Decker finished with three RBI while Fridell notched two RBI. 
  • Benthagen and Hopkins each finished with one RBI.
  • Benthagen, Fridell, and Hopkins all drew one walk apiece. 
  • The Pirates finished with 15 hits led by Lyman with three. 
 
GAME 2
 
SCORING:
 
  • The Wildcats struck early again when Benthagen was walked with the bases loaded to bring home King and make it 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • Ashtyn Falor drilled a double to right center to bring home TK Kai, Jillian Hampson, and Benthagen to make the Wildcat lead 4-0.  
  • King added on in the bottom of the fifth inning reaching on a throwing error by the pitcher to give Decker enough time to scamper home and make it a 5-0 crimson and black lead. 
  • Perez tacked on in the bottom of the fourth inning with a double to left center to score Decker and make it 6-0 'Cats. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning Reese Schimmel singled to left field to score Hampson and make it 7-0 CWU. 
  • Heytvelt called game in the bottom of the sixth inning singling up the middle to score Perez and make it 8-0 Wildcats. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus pitched the full game for the Wildcats, earning the shutout victory and allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out two against 23 batters. 
  • Lyman pitched the first 4.1 innings for WU allowing six hits, seven runs five of which were earned, and four walks while striking out three against 25 batters. 
  • Annie Brose wrapped up the game for Whitworth pitching the final 0.2 innings and allowing three hits, one run, and two walks while striking out one against seven batters. 
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Wildcats finished the game with nine hits. 
  • Sasha Mitchell, King, Perez, Benthagen, Heytvelt, Kaysner, Falor, Schimmel, and Decker all recorded one hit apiece. 
  • Falor notched three RBI while King, Perez, Benthagen, Heytvelt, and Schimmel all recorded on RBI apiece. 
  • Ashlee Laver, Kai, Perez, Benthagen, Falor, and Decker all drew one walk apiece. 
  • The lone hit for the Pirates came from Haley Montoya.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • The Wildcats are now 13-0 against Whitworth all-time.
  • CWU owns a 6-0 record against the Pirates in Ellensburg. 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will have a quick turnaround resuming GNAC play with a four-game series against Montana State Billings (7-16-1) starting tomorrow at noon and 2:00 p.m. 
  • The Wildcats and Yellowjackets will resume their battle with another doubleheader on Saturday with gametimes set for noon and 2:00 p.m. from Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field.
