Central Wins Battle of the Wildcats in Tournament of Champions Finale

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Central Washington University Wildcat softball team conquered the final day of the Tournament of Champions with a win against Chico State.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP
 
  • Final: Central Washington (5), Chico State (4)
  • Records: CWU (10-19), CHICO (6-16)
  • Location: Pedretti Sports Complex, Turlock, Calif.
 
SCORING:
 
  • Alyssa Benthagen started it off for Central Washington with a home run down the left field line allowing Jillian Hampson to run on in as well in the top of the first making it 2-0 CWU.
  • Elisa Haas got on base by an error from the pitcher to score Hannah Levy in the bottom of the third and cut the CWU lead to 2-1.
  • Brooke Jordan reached on base by an error in left field bringing Makenna King home in the top of the fifth to put Central up 3-1.
  • Haas hit a home run right down center field which ended up bringing Brianna Swihart and Gracie Dunning home in the process in the bottom of the fifth to give Chico the 4-3 lead.
  • Jordan doubled to right field getting Sasha Mitchell and Hampson to home plate in the top of the seventh to put the crimson and black back on top 5-4. 
 
PITCHING:
 
  • Zoey Theophilus started out pitching for CWU pitching 4 innings. Theophilus allowed five hits, three runs, four walks, and struck out one batter among facing twenty-three. 
  • Payton Kessler pitched 0.1 inning for CWU allowing two hits, one run, and one walk while facing four batters.
  • Ashlee Laver wrapped it up for CWU in the last two innings allowing one hit, one walk, and one strikeout among facing eight batters.
  • Amelie Valdez started it off for CSUC pitching six innings. Valdez allowed six hits, five runs, five walks, and eight strikeouts among facing thirty batters.
  • Katelyn Oldwin finished it up for CSUC allowing one hit among facing three batters.
 
HITTING:
 
  • The Central Washington Wildcats finished off by having a total of seven hits. With one from King, Benthagen, Jordan, Laney Kaysner, and Karysn Decker. Plus Hampson leading the way, finishing with two. 
  • Benthagen and Jordan accounted for two RBI each for CWU. 
  • Benthagen and Jordan drew two walks apiece while Mitchell drew one. 
  • The Chico State Wildcats finished with eight hits total with one from Haas, Lilly Cante, and Karlie Bilbrey. Two from Lewis, and three from Levy.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
 
  • The Wildcats are now 12-18 all-time against Chico State.
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Wildcats will take a road trip on over to Nampa, Idaho to take on the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks for a four-game series starting on Friday, March 29th at 1:00 p.m. and continuing into Saturday, March 30 with first pitch set for 11:00 a.m.
